The holidays have passed, but the promise of a new year and a new month is here! There are still plenty of things to do this month around The Bend.
Skate into the New Year
Howard Park in South Bend is wildly popular for its ice trail, not to mention the playground, hot chocolate and firepits. You're also close to several places to grab a bite to eat before or after your visit.
Ironworks Ice Rink in downtown Mishawaka is in its second season and is already a must-visit winter destination. There is an ice trail and traditional rink for skating. There are also other one-of-a-kind ice activities like bumper cars and Icebykes. Don't miss their theme nights!
Notre Dame Hoops and Hockey
Irish fans are enjoying the opportunity to cheer for Notre Dame football into January, but the winter sports are taking center court—and ice. The top-ranked Notre Dame women's basketball team enters ACC conference play after two major top five wins over Texas and UConn in December. The Irish most notably host ranked Georgia Tech on Jan. 16. The Notre Dame men's basketball team also dives into conference play, and Irish hockey hosts top-ranked Michigan on Jan. 10-11.
Check the Hoops and Hockey schedules and wear your green, blue, and gold to support the Irish in South Bend.
Try Cross Country Skiing, Tubing and Snowshoeing
We're big into outdoor activities in the winter time — it's a fantastic time to try something new. Cross country skis and snowshoes are available for rent at St. Patrick's County Park. There's also a popular tubing hill. George Wilson Park in Mishawaka is another great place to take the family out for some tubing. Keep in mind, these activities require a great snowpack. It's always best to check snow conditions in advance.
Explore Indoors
South Bend is home to special history that can be explored while visiting The History Museum and Oliver Mansion and Studebaker National Museum. The Bend's newest indoor experience, the Indiana Dinosaur Museum, is an exciting place to spend a chilly afternoon. Warm up with a stop by the South Bend Chocolate Cafe and tour the South Bend Chocolate Company as well on your visit.
Escape into the world of art at the Raclin Murphy Museum of Art on Notre Dame's campus or visit the South Bend Museum of Art in the heart of downtown.
Bowling, Laser Tag, Virtual Reality and More
Some days just call for staying inside. You can find a bunch of fun activities — bowling, laser tag, virtual reality, bumper cars, etc. — at a few places in Mishawaka: Generations AdventurePlex, Sky Zone Trampoline Park, and Strikes and Spares Entertainment Center.
Winter Days at Potawatomi Zoo
As we settle into the snowy season, Winter Days at the Potawatomi Zoo are a great way to get outside and visit some of your favorite animals. Winter Days take place four times a month from January through March in preparation for the full reopening of the zoo in April.
