Stanley Kubrick adapted William Makepeace Thackeray's novel "The Luck of Barry Lyndon" from 1844 for his tenth feature film. Coming off of "Dr. Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey", and "A Clockwork Orange", Kubrick had an astronomical reputation to uphold.
