If you're looking for a break from the city without leaving its limits, Rum Village Park is the place to go. Its 160 acres of rolling woodlands are located on the south side of South Bend. From hiking to mountain biking to aerial adventure, this is your guide for things to do at this wonderful outdoor area.

Explore the Rum Village Hiking Trails

Rum Village is a natural woodland with huge trees. Three miles of hiking trails work their way through these woods, making it one of the best places around The Bend to hike. There are some rolling hills to traverse along the way but it's a mostly easy-to-moderate hike. Here are a few guidelines to consider when hiking at Rum Village:

  • Please stay on marked trails.
  • Bicycles or motorized vehicles are prohibited.
  • Leave all wood (living or dead).
  • Pets are welcome on the trails but should be leashed at all times.

Inside Rum Village Nature Center

Located inside the park, the Rum Village Nature Center is a great place for families to stop during their visit. Kids can explore the interpretive exhibits and see reptiles (like snakes!) on display. There is also a wildlife viewing window, where you can see birds and other animals as they pass by.

Ride the Rum Village Mountain Bike Trails

Built by the Northern Indiana Mountain Bike Association, the mountain bike trail at Rum Village is described as an "old-school, tight single track." It's actually three connected segments — beginner, intermediate and advanced — covering around six miles total in a single-direction loop. Hills become more rugged as  you move up in difficulty.

Riders should be aware that the track is shared, so be on the lookout for hikers.

Take Your Pet to the Rum Village Dog Park

Rum Village is a great place to take your four-legged friend when traveling together. Dogs are bound to love the wooded trails. Keep in mind they should be on a leash at all times when hiking.

If you're looking for some off-leash time, the Rum Village Dog Park has three fenced-off areas for all sizes. There's plentiful shade, benches and a water fountain. Nearby you'll find a playground for kids and a restroom.

Play Disc Golf at Rum Village

Rum Village's hills make its 18-hole disc golf course a wonderful (and completely free) challenge. It's very well-maintained and uses the change in elevation, plus ample trees, to create a fun course. It starts out on the easy side but gets more difficult on the back nine.
