Raíces: Mariachi Showcase and Competition with Rice University

On September 11–13, Mariachi ND and Mariachi Luna Llena will join forces on campus. These two groups will participate in a Mariachi Showcase and Competition at 3:00 p.m. September 11, in Hagerty Family Cafe, Duncan Student Center. It is open to Rice and Notre Dame fans, alumni, students, and families. The competition will be judged by three members of the Hispanic Alumni Association from each university. MariachiND has a 30 year history, founded by five students from Texas in 1995. Today the group has 20 members and a 90 minute repertoire of songs they regularly perform on and off campus. Mariachi Luna Llena is Rice University's official student-run professional mariachi band. Founded in 2013 by students and faculty, the ensemble plays traditional Mexican music at campus, public, and sporting events across Houston, Texas. This event is organized by Mariachi ND with cosponsorship from the Institute for Latino Studies and the Hispanic Alumni of Notre Dame. Originally published at latinostudies.nd.edu.
