Craft Cocktail Bars In The Bend

Known for Notre Dame-themed bars and local spots to grab a beer, The Bend is also home to a burgeoning cocktail scene. Grab a seat and sip on something boozy at these bars and restaurants.

THE EXCHANGE WHISKEY BAR

The Exchange has been setting the bar (see what we did there?) for cocktail spots since its 2013 opening. Home to more than 300 premium whiskeys, connoisseurs consider the Mad Men-style bar a destination. Order a classic Old Fashioned. You can’t go wrong.

THE HIDEAWAY AT THE LASALLE

There are speakeasies and then there are speakeasies. Tucked into The LaSalle apartment building in downtown South Bend, The Hideaway is the latter with a historic and intimate feel. Order a Bee’s Knees to really embraces the 1920s vibe.

SPIRITED

Described as a “luxurious lounge bar in downtown South Bend,” Spirited is moody (in a good way) and has a creative cocktail list. We love “Berried Alive,” which includes rum, pineapple and lime. If you’re looking for something straight forward order an “I know the Owner.” It’s a shot of Jameson or Fernet, chased with a PBR.

KANKAKEE GRILLE

Located inside Four Winds Casino South Bend, this restaurant and bar is a gem on South Bend’s south side. If you’re visiting during summer, order a Kankakee Sour (it utilizes regional whiskey) and wander out to the patio to unwind al fresco.

LASALLE KITCHEN + TAVERN

LKT has a little bit of everything (including one of the best craft beer menus in South Bend), including a boozy cocktail menu. The signature drinks change by the season. Whiskey cocktails include the Forgetful Elephant, which features a house cinnamon-infused whiskey.

ROHR’S AT THE MORRIS INN

Pull up a stool at the bar at this Notre Dame campus gathering spot. Rohr’s is a great place to unwind with a drink in hand. If you’re lucky, Murf will be behind the bar. Have the legend himself break out the Canadian Club for a signature Father Hesburgh Manhattan.

THE HAMMER AND QUILL

Head to South Bend’s East Bank neighborhood (just east of downtown) for a cocktail spot that leans heavy into its history. The menu is ever-changing, but the Willow Switch is one of our favorites. It combines Tito’s vodka, lemon, Patron Citronge, sake and guava-mango nectar.

JESÚS LATIN GRILL + TEQUILA BAR

This locally owned, Latin-inspired gathering spot in downtown Mishawaka has one of the most unique menus (for food and drink!) in the area. The Blood sounds risqué but is a safe cocktail choice. Looking for something even more unique? Sip the Orange Coconut Creamsicle margarita.
