Looking for a weekend getaway that offers more adrenaline rush than a relaxed vibe? This is your guide to an adventure-filled visit to The Bend, enjoying all that the outdoors has to offer.

Spring and Summer

South Bend weather includes some hot and humid days, so the East Race Waterway is a great way to almost guarantee staying cool. The East Race is a Class 2 rapid, providing thrill through a few small drops and multiple opportunities to get splashed. It’s an exciting way to see the city from a new perspective and beat the heat!

Potato Creek State Park is one of The Bend's outdoor gems. Covering 3,800 acres, Potato Creek State Park has lots to see, including wildlife, beautiful landscapes, and its 327-acre lake. With 6 trails, ranging from easy to moderate to rugged, it offers hikes for all skill levels. For those looking for water, their lake provides opportunities to kayak, canoe, fish, etc. The wildlife and landscapes make for beautiful scenery to enjoy while getting adventurous outdoors!

Visiting the zoo is always fun for all ages, but even more fun when you add an up-close-and-personal encounter with some of the animals. Potawatomi Zoo offers up-close experiences including the thrilling adventure of feeding Masai giraffes straight from your hand, and petting Masamba, the Southern White Rhino. Additionally, you can get close-up experiences with bison, otters, and sloths. These events are ticketed separately and are well worth it for the more immersive zoo experience.

The Indiana Dinosaur Museum is a great place to adventure back in time 1.9 billion years. With interactive attractions, everyone will be able to dig for fossils, see ancient skeletons, and even real dinosaur skin (which is extremely rare). There is lots to explore indoors, but the experience is made complete with over 90 acres of prairie right outside of the museum that you can explore yourself, by visiting the bison or walking the trails.

Fall

Fall can get spooky in The Bend, with Fear Itself at Legend Park and Niles Scream Park, thrill is all around. Fear Itself is named to be one of the largest scream parks in the country, which almost guarantees thrill, and Niles Scream Park is known to be a fall favorite for the locals. Either of these scream parks will give you an adrenaline rush and get you hooked on the spooky season.

Thistleberry Farms is another great option for the fall. With a U-Pick pumpkin patch, four corn mazes, hayrides, jumping pillows, farm animals, and pedal tractors, Thistleberry has something for everyone! They have enough to keep you busy all day and will give you the perfect fall day.

Winter

George Wilson Park provides another opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, especially in the winter. George Wilson is a great place to enjoy the snow and utilize their tubing hill and cross-country skiing capabilities. They also have a warm shelter that provides heat from both its furnace and a stone fireplace. Geroge Wilson Park is a place that provides fun and thrills, especially in the winter months.

Winter is also a great time to visit Howard Park. Explore their skating ribbon that includes a 16,000 square-foot trail and is attached to an ice pond where you can find a more traditional skating experience. Howard Park is great for all levels of skaters, from beginners to those more seasoned. Additionally, there is a playground in the middle of the skating ribbon, and there is food and drink around the park, making Howard Park enjoyable for everyone!

Ironworks Ice Rink is another great location to enjoy winter activities, as they offer ice skating along with icebykes and bumper cars. These are exciting ways to experience the ice and embrace the cold weather in ways unlike anywhere else in The Bend. Ironworks Plaza has a great surrounding area with multiple restaurants and public parks, making it a perfect location for everyone to enjoy.

You can take the adventure indoors at Generations AdventurePlex where you can find bowling, laser tag, putt-putt, arcade games, axe-throwing, etc. This is a great option for indoor adventures, where people of all ages will find fun and thrills.
