Overview

The History Museum's mission is to collect, preserve, interpret, exhibit and teach the heritage of the St. Joseph River Valley region. First organized in 1867, The History Museum is the second oldest historical society in Indiana. The site includes: The Oliver Mansion or Copshaholm, the 38-room mansion that was once home to local industrialist J.D. Oliver Worker’s Home, reflecting a Polish immigrant family in the 1930s.

It is also the repository for the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League collection which includes photographs, programs, film footage, scrapbooks and playing equipment used by the teams. Individuals and institutions from across the country turn to The History Museum for research and information on the AAGPBL.

In 2024 the historic Navarre Cabin was relocated to The History Museum campus for further education and learning opportunities about the earliest settlers in St. Joseph County.

You can now stream “A Bend in Time,” a new podcast of curated histories of the greater South Bend area. Hosted by Aaron Helman, a new series of 8 episodes will be released quarterly. The first series, “Dawn of the City of South Bend,” is sponsored by Tina and Andy Nickle and includes eight episodes exploring South Bend’s first 25 years after its incorporation, through the lens of its first eight mayors.

The History Museum is adjacent to the Studebaker National Museum.
