As seen recently in the Browning with her film Dahomey, Mati Diop's works take on heavy subject material but with a genre-bending and playful approach honed in her background as a shorts filmmaker. Her skills translated neatly to Atlantics, her first feature film that nabbed her the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival. Broadly a mix of horror/fantasy and romance, Atlantics begins with a group of workers leaving Senegal for Spain in order to find work. When they disappear, the story returns to Senegal and the women they left behind, who are compelled by anger, desire, and perhaps ghosts to seek retribution for the tragedy.
