Overview

The South Bend Lyric Opera proudly marks its 10th anniversary season with a powerful production of La Bohème, the iconic opera by Giacomo Puccini, coming to the IUSB stage the weekend of May 29th and June 6th.

Set in 1830s Paris, La Bohème follows a group of young artists navigating the joys and hardships of bohemian life. At the heart of the story is the passionate yet fleeting romance between Rodolfo, a poet, and Mimì, a delicate seamstress. Through soaring music and intimate storytelling, the opera captures universal themes of love, friendship, sacrifice, and the bittersweet passage of time.

Beyond the opera stage, La Bohème has had a lasting cultural impact—most notably serving as the inspiration for the groundbreaking Broadway musical Rent by Jonathan Larson. Rent reimagines Puccini’s story in modern-day New York City, echoing the same struggles of young artists, the urgency of love, and the realities of illness and loss—demonstrating the enduring relevance of La Bohème across generations.

South Bend Lyric Opera’s production of La Bohème is directed by Carl Ratner and conducted by Maestro Jameson Cooper, with a cast comprised of singers from California, Nebraska, Illinois, Michigan, and our beloved Indiana.

“As we celebrate 10 years of bringing opera to the South Bend community, La Bohème is a fitting production—timeless, emotional, and deeply human,” said Rita Koehler, Board Member. “Its influence can still be seen today, from the opera house to Broadway.

La Bohème is our tribute to the past, our celebration of the present, and our promise for the future,” commented Emanuel-Cristian Caraman, Artistic Director.
