Without a doubt, one of the most fun things about winter around The Bend is the return of ice skating. Putting on skates and gliding across the ice is a well-loved local tradition. These are the best places around South Bend for ice skating.
Howard Park - South Bend
Howard Park transforms winter in downtown South Bend into something unforgettable. The moment you step onto its winding ice trail, you’re wrapped in twinkling lights, crisp air and the buzz of skaters gliding past. When the sun dips low and the trail comes alive with glowing lights, the whole place turns into a winter wonderland.
The trail features small rolling hills and soft curves. Skaters work their way around the large, ADA accessible playground while catching beautiful views of the park and the city beyond. There is also an ice skating rink attached to the trail for those looking to embark on a more traditional skating experience.
Skating season begins the day after Thanksgiving with the Winter Open and runs through early March. Visitors can book season passes and reserve ice time in advance. There are specific sessions, each lasting 80 minutes.
Know Before You Go
- Dress warm: Make sure to layer up for cold temperatures. There are firepits and heaters located throughout the park.
- Outdoor skate changing: Change your skates outdoors near one of the heated areas.
- Leave valuables at home: Lockers will be available to rent during your session. It's best, however, to leave valuables at home.
- Consider visiting during non-peak hours: For those looking for more space, consider visiting during the week.
Ironworks Ice Rink - Mishawaka
Situated in downtown Mishawaka, Ironworks Ice Rink brings a high-energy twist to winter fun. With its spacious rink, upbeat atmosphere and prime location along the river, it’s the perfect spot to lace up and hit the ice. It's part ribbon and part traditional ice skating rink for visitors of all skill levels.
Skating is available only by reservation, so it's best to make sure you sign up online in advance. Each skate session lasts 90 minutes.
If you thought Ironworks Ice Rink was just for skating, think again. It also features ice bumper cars and icebyks, both of which can also be booked online in advance.
The electric bumper cars are an absolute blast. Each bumper car session lasts 15 minutes. Riders must be at least 5 years old and 42 inches tall to ride alone. Children under 4 years old can ride with a parent and don't require a ticket.
Icebyks, a low-riding bike similar to a Big Wheel, are a fun way to cruise around the ribbon with friends and family. Sessions for those are also 15 minutes long.

Compton Family Ice Arena
Ever thought about lacing up the skates inside one of the best college hockey facilities in the country? Compton Family Ice Arena at Notre Dame, home to the Fighting Irish hockey team, offers public skating from noon-1:20 p.m. most weekdays on either on the main Lefty Smith Rink or the Olympic-sized sheet.
