The Perfect Family Weekend in South Bend
Spring is a great time to get outside and rediscover some of your favorite family activities.
Make sure to put these on your to-do list as the weather warms up.
Visiting Potawatomi Zoo
Indiana's first zoo is no relic. Giraffe feeding, a pride of lions and a new café/bear exhibit await at Potawatomi Zoo, making for a fun and approachable place for families to visit. Other animals include okapi, snow leopards and red pandas.
Don't forget to snag a ride on the Zoo Train or stop by the carousel!
Hiking and Biking at Area Parks
Nothing says spring like getting out and enjoying the open spaces and sunlight. Whether on foot or via bicycle, trails at St. Patrick's County Park and Potato Creek State Park are among our most popular. You can walk along the St. Joseph River and play on the wonderful ADA-accessible playground at Howard Park.
Another great place to explore are the parks along the Mishawaka Riverwalk, a path on both sides of the river that passes through several parks. Central Park includes a massive playground. Beutter and Battell are also worth visiting.
Heading to the Ballpark
Four Winds Field is considered one of the best ballparks in Minor League Baseball and for good reason. Home to the South Bend Cubs, it offers great food and plenty to do other than watching the game. There is a fun zone for kids, a splash pad for warmer nights and great food. Opening night is set for Tuesday, April 9.
Bowling, Laser Tag and Other Indoor Activities
Save these for a rainy day:
Generations AdventurePlex: Dozens of games for all ages, laser tag, bowling, a drop tower and more are on the list of things to do here.
Strikes and Spares Entertainment Center Bowling, go-karts and bumper cars are top of the list.
Sky Zone Trampoline Park: Pretty much the best bounce house of all time. There is a free-climb area and a space dedicated specifically to younger kids.
Walking the University of Notre Dame
No list would be complete without a visit to the University of Notre Dame to explore its iconic architecture. Spring is a beautiful time of year to see the Golden Dome, the Grotto and other landmarks when they're surrounded by incredible blooms.
Touring the South Bend Chocolate Factory
Taking a behind-the-scenes look at how things are done at the South Bend Chocolate Factory is always a fun time. You can see treats being made then pick some up for yourself.
Exploring the Museum District
Not far from downtown South Bend, multiple museums are within a short drive of each other. Take a step back to the classic car era at Studebaker National Museum and learn more about local development at The History Museum, which are in the same building. Nearby you can understand more about local civil rights history at the Civil Rights Heritage Center.
